One of life's greatest blessings is the gift of friendship. We often think of friends as people who share our interests or enjoy the same activities. Yet the deepest friendships are built over years of faithfulness, kindness, and simply showing up for one another through life's joys and sorrows.

The Bible reminds us, "A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for a time of adversity." (Proverbs 17:17) Those words have taken on new meaning for me during this past year.

After my father's passing, I experienced firsthand how enduring friendships can span not only decades but even generations. My father and his dear friend, Omer, met while attending university many years ago. Both eventually became teachers in Michigan during the 1960s, and what began as a college friendship grew into a lifelong bond. They shared countless conversations, family gatherings, and the ordinary moments that ultimately shape a lifetime.

Although both men have now passed away, that friendship did not end with them.

Omer's daughters, Christy and Becky, attended my father's memorial service in April, offering comfort simply through their presence. While they were unable to travel to Kentucky for my father's burial beside my mother, they have continued to stay in touch, checking on me with thoughtful messages and phone calls. Their kindness has reminded me that friendship is not measured by distance but by faithfulness.

I have come to realize that the love our parents shared with their friends became a legacy that was quietly passed on to the next generation. What began as two young university students building a friendship has become a continuing source of encouragement more than half a century later.

In a world that often seems hurried and disconnected, friendships like these are precious gifts from God. They remind us that we were never meant to walk life's journey alone. Through family, church, and faithful friends, God provides companions who help carry our burdens, celebrate our joys, and remind us of His enduring love.

For that gift, I remain deeply grateful.
